Benefits of Triple Glazed Aluminium Windows
Triple glazing has an extra layer of glass when compared to double glazing and has a number of key advantages which include improved energy efficiency, better security and potential for noise reduction.
Noise Reduction
We are sometimes asked if triple glazing will reduce noise from outside such as traffic or pedestrians and whilst it will reduce it to some extent you are probably better choosing a double glazed unit with specific acoustic properties. Sometimes less is more.
Triple glazing can be installed in a variety of Genesis Collection doors and windows in both uPVC and aluminium – this list includes flush casements, sliding patio doors and bifold doors.
One product that can’t be triple glazed is the Genesis sliding sash window as it has a 24mm cavity which is too narrow to accommodate any triple glazed unit.
Energy Performance
The first and most obvious attribute to asses is energy performance and with triple glazing the additional sheet of glass and cavity creates an additional thermal barrier to keep the cold out, the warm in and energy bills down.
In the Genesis Warmcore Aluminium range we can specify triple glazing as it has a significant impact on the WER and U-Values produced. The U-value for double glazing is typically between 1.3 W/m2k and 1.5 W/m2k and with triple glazing this will come down to between 0.8 W/m2k and 1.0 W/m2k
Considerations
There are a couple of disadvantages to triple glazing the first is that the unit will weigh a good 50% more than it’s double glazed counterpart and as a result we will generally specify heavy duty hinges to allow for the additional weight.
Secondly with there being 50% more glass than found in a double glazed unit the cost of the glass will be approximately 50% more. Not too much of a problem if you only have one window but if you have a large project this could amount to a significant difference in price.
It’s is worth looking at the overall cost of installing triple glazing instead of double glazing and assessing how long it is likely to take to recover the initial investment by way of energy savings.
