How to Stop Draughts From uPVC Windows

It’s winter. It’s freezing outside. All you want to do is curl up indoors, in the warm. The only trouble is, your uPVC windows are draughty. Every time you walk past a window you get a blast of freezing cold air. Curtains billow when they’re closed. And you’re concerned that your central heating is fighting a losing battle.

So how do you stop draughts from uPVC windows?

In this article, we’ll look at what could be causing the draughts from your uPVC windows and how to stop them.

What causes draughts from uPVC windows?

Several things could be causing your uVPC windows to be draughty.

Firstly, check the hinges. Wear and tear, dirt and rust can mean hinges on uPVC windows can fall out of alignment. This means your uPVC window isn’t forming a tight seal when it’s closed. A good clean might do the trick but you might need to get them realigned or even replaced.

Next check the interlock. You’ll find these on the hinge side of the window. The two parts of the interlock need to fit tightly together when the window is closed. If they don’t, they can cause a draught. Again, they might need to be realigned or replaced.

The window lock might also be causing your uPVC windows to be draughty. If this is the case, you can adjust them with an Allen key. This will mean the window will close more tightly and stop the draughts.

The window seal failing can also cause draughts on uPVC windows. Window seals perish over time and can be damaged too. If this is the case, they’ll need to be replaced.

Finally, check the plastering and window board around your uPVC windows. If you can spot cracks or holes, this could be what’s causing the draughts. Fill them in to stop the draughts.

Older uPVC windows and draughts

In many cases, draughts may simply be a sign that your uPVC windows have reached the end of their lifespan. Many of the signs above indicate your windows may need to be replaced.

In addition, older uPVC windows simply aren’t as thermally efficient and draughtproof as modern windows. The appearance has also come a long way since the early days of uPVC windows. In short, today’s uPVC windows are much less draughty and much better looking.
